The word theory has a number of distinct meanings in different fields of
knowledge, depending on their
methodologies and the context of
discussion.In common usage,
people often use the
word theory to signify a
conjecture, an
opinion, or a
speculation. In this usage, a theory is not necessarily based on
facts; in other words, it is not required to be consistent with
true descriptions of
reality. True descriptions of reality are more reflectively
understood as statements which would be true independently of what people think about them. In this usage, the word is synonymous with
hypothesis. This common usage of theory leads to the common but misguided statement "It's not a fact, it's only a theory."

Eine Theorie ist ein vereinfachtes Bild eines Ausschnitts der
Realität, der mit diesem Bild beschrieben und erklärt werden soll, um auf dieser Grundlage möglicherweise
Prognosen zu machen und Handlungsempfehlungen zu geben. Jeder Theorie liegen mehr oder weniger deutlich ausformulierte Annahmen zugrunde. Es lassen sich
Alltagstheorien und
wissenschaftliche Theorien unterscheiden. Letztere unterscheiden sich von ersteren durch höheren Grad an Bewusstheit, ausdrückliche Formulierung, größeren Umfang und meist durch die Einbeziehung von systematischer
Beobachtung, die der Prüfung der Theorien dient (
empirische Prüfung). Im folgenden geht es primär um wissenschaftliche Theorien.

Il termine teoria (dal
greco theorein, composto da thea, "spettacolo" e horao, "osservo", ovvero "guardare uno spettacolo") indica, nel linguaggio comune, un'
idea nata in base ad una qualche
ipotesi, congettura, speculazione o supposizione, anche astratte rispetto alla realtà.Secondo alcune fonti il termine era usato frequentemente dagli antichi
greci nel senso di "guardare" un palcoscenico di
teatro, cosa che potrebbe spiegare perché a volte la parola teoria è usata per qualcosa di provvisorio o in contrapposizione con la
realtà. A volte, soprattutto nel gergo giornalistico, quello che potrebbe essere definito come "teoria" viene impropriamente detto
teorema (che in comune con "teoria" ha l'etimologia, ma il cui significato corretto è proposizione dimostrata con regole logiche a partire da
assiomi); ad esempio "teorema Cosenza" o il "teorema accusatorio" sono in realtà insiemi di ipotesi.
