Theatre (in American English usually theater) is a collaborative form of fine art that uses live performers to present the experience of a real or imagined event before a live audience in a specific place. The performers may communicate this experience to the audience through combinations of gesture, speech, song, music or dance. Elements of design and stagecraft are used to enhance the physicality, presence and immediacy of the experience. The specific place of the performance is also named by the word "theatre" as derived from the Ancient Greek θέατρον (théatron, “a place for viewing”) and θεάομαι (theáomai, “to see", "to watch", "to observe”).

Theater (von théatron „Schaustätte, Theater“; von θεάομαι theaomai „anschauen“) ist die Bezeichnung für eine szenische Darstellung eines inneren und äußeren Geschehens als künstlerische Kommunikation zwischen Akteuren (Darstellern) und dem Publikum. Mit dem Wort Theater kann das Gebäude gemeint sein, in dem Theater gespielt wird (siehe Theaterarchitektur), oder der Prozess des Theater-Spielens oder auch allgemein eine Gruppe von Menschen, die Theater machen, also eine Theatergruppe.

Le théâtre désigne à la fois l'art de la représentation dramatique, un genre littéraire particulier (voir théâtre (genre littéraire)) et le bâtiment dans lequel se déroulent les spectacles de théâtre (voir théâtre (bâtiment)).

Teater, ibland drama eller skådespel, är en typ av scenkonst, som syftar till att agera, berätta, framställa eller förevisa historier, idéer eller känslor inför en publik. Detta sker vanligtvis genom dialog, det vill säga tal och gester mellan olika rollfigurer, spelade, eller agerade av skådespelare. Dessa måste kunna uttrycka alternativa personligheter, åldrar, röster, kön, och kroppshållningar. Skådespeleriet i en teaterföreställning samverkar med ett antal andra visuella element, såsom scenografi, ljussättning, kostymering och smink. Ofta används ljud, specialeffekter och rekvisita för att förhöja verklighetsintrycket.

Teatr (łac. theatrum, z gr. theatron, przyglądanie się, widowisko) – rodzaj sztuki widowiskowej –  aktor lub grupa aktorów na żywo daje przedstawienie dla zgromadzonej publiczności. Aktor i widz to dwa najistotniejsze składniki, bez których istnienie teatru nie byłoby możliwe. Teatr może obyć się bez reżysera, inscenizatora, choreografa czy scenografa, ale spektakl bez widzów - lub bez aktorów - nie jest możliwy.
