Plik tekstowy (ang. text file lub plain text file) – plik składający się z tekstu i formatowany zgodnie z przyjętym standardem, zazwyczaj ASCII lub jego odmianie (możliwy jest też zapis w standardach Unicode). Plik taki zawiera tekst kodowany w wybranym standardzie wraz ze znakami formatowania tekstu, w ASCII znaki o kodach mniejszych od 32. Znak Ctrl_Z jest znacznikiem końca pliku a zawartość pliku za tym znakiem jest zazwyczaj ignorowana.
