This article deals with the specific antibiotic called tetracycline. For the group of antibiotics known as the tetracyclines, see tetracycline antibiotics. Tetracycline (INN) (IPA: ) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic produced by the Streptomyces bacterium, indicated for use against many bacterial infections. It is commonly used to treat acne. It is sold under the brand names Sumycin, Terramycin, Tetracyn, and Panmycin, among others. Actisite is a thread-like fiber form, used in dental applications. It is also used to produce several semi-synthetic derivatives, which together are known as the Tetracycline antibiotic group.

La tétracycline est un antibiotique produit par une bactérie du genre Streptomyces. Elle est indiquée contre nombre d'infections bactériennes. Elle est également disponible comme laurylsulfate (Tetralysal®), etc. On l'utilise également pour produire de nombreux dérivés semi-synthétiques, les cyclines ou tétracyclines (au pluriel).

Tetracycline (oder in eingedeutschter Schreibung Tetrazykline) sind antibiotisch wirksame Arzneistoffe (Antibiotika), die von verschiedenen Streptomyces-Arten produziert werden. Tetracycline führen zu einer Hemmung der bakteriellen Proteinsynthese an deren Ribosomen und hemmen somit deren Wachstum (bakteriostatische Wirksamkeit) von grampositiven, gramnegativen und zahlreichen zellwandlosen Bakterien.

Tetracycline is een antibacteriële stof (antibioticum) die door het bacteriegeslacht Streptomyces wordt geproduceerd. Het is geïndiceerd bij een groot scala aan bacteriële infecties, zowel grampositieve als gramnegatieve, en een vele andere micro-organismen waaronder spirocheten, actinomyceten en een aantal protozoën. Schimmels en virussen zijn ongevoelig voor het medicijn. Tetracycline behoort tot de groep antibiotica die tetracyclinen of ook kortweg cyclinen wordt genoemd, allemaal afgeleide vormen van het hoofdbestanddeel tetracycline. Het wordt in de wereld onder veel verschillende namen verkocht, waaronder Tetralysal 300®, Panmycin®, Brodspec® en Tetracap®. De stof werd voor het eerst ontdekt door Lloyd Conover in de onderzoekscentra van geneesmiddelenfabrikant Pfizer en het patent ervoor werd verkregen in 1955.
