Tetanus is a medical condition that is characterized by a prolonged contraction of skeletal muscle fibers. The primary symptoms are caused by tetanospasmin, a neurotoxin produced by the Gram-positive, obligate anaerobic bacterium Clostridium tetani. Infection generally occurs through wound contamination, and often involves a cut or deep puncture wound. As the infection progresses, muscle spasms in the jaw develop hence the common name, lockjaw. This is followed by difficulty swallowing and general muscle stiffness and spasms in other parts of the body. Infection can be prevented by proper immunization and by post-exposure prophylaxis.

Tetanus, auch Wundstarrkrampf genannt, ist eine häufig tödlich verlaufende Infektionskrankheit, welche die muskelsteuernden Nervenzellen befällt und durch das Bakterium Clostridium tetani ausgelöst wird. Die resistenten Sporen des Bakteriums kommen nahezu überall vor, auch im Straßenstaub oder in der Gartenerde. Die Infektion erfolgt durch das Eindringen der Sporen in Wunden. Unter anaeroben Bedingungen, dh unter Sauerstoff-Abwesenheit, vermehrt sich das Bakterium und sondert Giftstoffe (Toxine) ab: Das proteolytische Toxin Tetanospasmin schädigt die muskelsteuernden Nervenzellen und verursacht dadurch die typischen Lähmungen und Muskelkrämpfe. Das Toxin Tetanolysin ist herzschädigend.

Tężec (łac. Tetanus) - ciężka choroba przyranna zwierząt i ludzi. Tężec jest chorobą zakaźną (wywoływana przez czynnik zakaźny), ale niezaraźliwą, ponieważ jej przyczyną są egzotoksyny (o charakterze neurotoksyn) wytwarzane przez laseczki tężca (Clostridium tetani).Tężec występuje na całym świecie. Zwierzęciem najczęściej zapadającym na tężec jest koń. Inne zwierzęta, jak choćby psy, koty, bydło i świnie są mniej wrażliwe. Natomiast ptaki są odporne. Bardzo podatny jest człowiek.W Polsce w 1999 roku zarejestrowano 21, a w 2000 14 zachorowań na tężec. Śmiertelność w wypadku zachorowania wynosi ok. 30%.

Il tetano è un'infezione provocata dalla tossina prodotta dal Clostridium tetani. Si presenta come una paralisi spastica che inizia da viso e collo per poi procedere in torace e addome ed alla fine diffonde anche agli arti, attraverso tagli o ferite, anche di lieve entità. Questa malattia provoca la morte per collasso cardio-respiratorio, causando la contrazione con paralisi della muscolatura, perché si localizza a livello dei nervi. In un caso su dieci porta a morte per l'impossibilità di respirare. La malattia di per sé non è infettiva. In Italia ogni anno si registrano circa 100 morti, tra adulti ed anziani.
