territory (country subdivision)

Types of administrative and/or political territories include:Many types of legally administered territories, each of which is a non-sovereign geographic area that has come under the authority of another government with varying degrees of local governmental control. This can include federated states which share authority with a central government such as the Länder of Germany or the Counties of a state within one of the States of the United States (those states being another example themselves that were sovereign and ceded rights to a central federated government), or alternatively, a administrative district established by a central nation-state as with the Bundesländer of Austria (which are now a federation), or the subnational entities constituting a unitary state such as France.

La notion de territoire a pris une importance croissante en géographie et notamment en géographie humaine et politique, même si ce concept est utilisé par d'autres sciences humaines. Dans le dictionnaire de géographie de Pierre George et Fernand Verger le territoire est défini comme un espace géographique qualifié par une appartenance juridique (on parle ainsi de « territoire national ») ; ou par une spécificité naturelle ou culturelle : territoire montagneux, territoire linguistique. Dans ce dernier cas, le terme d'aire (« aire linguistique ») pourrait lui être préféré. Quelle que soit sa nature, un territoire implique l'existence de frontières ou de limites. Ces deux derniers termes sont utilisés en fonction du type de territoire dont ils forment le périmètre. Un territoire politique, ou une subdivision administrative, est délimité par une frontière ; un territoire naturel est circonscrit par une limite, terme moins juridique.
