A tell mostly consists of mudbrick or other architecture containing a high proportion of stone or loam as well as to a minor extent domestic refuse. The distribution of this phenomenon spans from the Indus valley in the east to Central Europe in the west. There are about 50,000 visible tells in the Middle East, a testament to the long settlement of the area.

Un Tel ou tell est un terme archéologique qui désigne un site en forme de monticule qui résulte de l'accumulation de matières et de leur érosion sur une longue période, sur un lieu anciennement occupé par les hommes. Il s'agit d'une colline artificielle formée par les différentes couches d'habitations humaines, ceci est caractéristique du Néolithique ancien.

In der Archäologie bezeichnet das arabische Wort Tell bzw. Tall oder Tel (Siedlungshügel) eine Erhebung, die durch wiederholte Besiedlung entstand, wie zum Beispiel die Zitadelle von Aleppo in Syrien. Alternativ wird hierfür auch oft die persische Form Tepe verwendet.Auf Hebräisch/Ivrith nennt man Tells tel (תל), auf Türkisch Höyük oder Hüyük, auf Persisch Tepe, auf Griechisch Magoula, Rumänisch Magura und auf Bulgarisch Mogila (eigentlich Grabhügel). Der auch in Südeuropa Tellsiedlung genannte Wohnhügel wird in Dänemark Byhøj genannt.Tells entstehen nur in Gebieten, in denen Lehmziegel oder Stampflehm (Pisé) das bevorzugte Baumaterial darstellen, die Niederschläge gering sind und Siedlungen über einen längeren Zeitraum immer wieder an einem Ort errichtet werden. Sie finden sich im gesamten vorderen Orient, auch in Europa, in Griechenland, Bulgarien und in Teilen Ungarns und Serbiens, erreichen hier aber nicht die Höhe wie etwa im Irak. Einer der größten bekannten Tells ist die Stadt Erbil (Arbela) in Kurdistan.
