A telenovela is a limited-run television serial melodrama of the type made famous in Latin America. The word is a portmanteau of tele, short for television, and novela ("novel/soap opera"). Telenovelas are essentially soap operas in miniseries format.Patricio Wills, head of development at Telemundo, describes telenovelas thus: "The plot is always the same. In the first three minutes of the first episode the viewer already knows the novela will end with that same couple kissing each other. A telenovela is all about a couple who wants to kiss and a scriptwriter who stands in their way for 150 episodes."

Telenowela (hiszp. telenovela) – gatunek telewizyjny bliski serialowi telewizyjnemu, często mylony z operą mydlaną. Nazwa polska wywodzi się z hiszpańskiego telenovela. Z punktu widzenia literackiego jest ona niepoprawna, gdyż termin 'nowela' w języku polskim oznacza krótką formę literacką, natomiast w hiszpańskim słowo novela znaczy 'powieść'.

La telenovela è un genere di serial televisivo nato nell'America Latina. In un numero di puntate che si aggira in media sulle 120-200, narra minutamente le vicende familiari e sentimentali di un gruppo fisso di personaggi.Per i maggiori paesi produttori (Brasile, Messico, Argentina, Colombia e Venezuela) la telenovela è diventata risorsa di esportazione, diventando un fenomeno commerciale, mediatico e di costume di livello planetario, cui le Nazioni Unite in una conferenza mondiale sulla popolazione del 1984 hanno attribuito un importante ruolo sociologico.
