Taxonomy is the practice and science of classification. The word comes from the Greek , taxis, 'order' + , nomos, 'law' or 'science'. Taxonomies, or taxonomic schemes, are composed of taxonomic units known as taxa (singular taxon), or kinds of things that are arranged frequently in a hierarchical structure, typically related by subtype-supertype relationships, also called parent-child relationships. In such a subtype-supertype relationship the subtype kind of thing has by definition the same constraints as the supertype kind of thing plus one or more additional constraints. For example, car is a subtype of vehicle. So any car is also a vehicle, but not every vehicle is a car. So, a thing needs to satisfy more constraints to be a car than to be a vehicle.

La taxinomie ou taxonomie est la science qui a pour objet de décrire les organismes vivants et de les regrouper en entités appelées taxons afin de pouvoir les identifier puis les nommer, et enfin les classer. Elle complète la systématique qui est la science qui organise le classement des taxons et leur relations. Parmi ces méthodes, les plus récentes incluent une nouvelle approche conceptuelle de la classification mais aussi des méthodes d'analyse d'éléments empiriques restés longtemps ignorés de la science avant l'arrivée, au cours de la seconde moitié du , des découvertes de la biologie moléculaire.

Taxonomie (v. griech. táxis „Ordnung“, -nómos „Gesetz“) ist primär die sprachwissenschaftliche Klassifikation aller Gegenstände (Entitäten) und Ereignisse in begriffliche Taxa (Sing.: Taxon) (Gruppen) bzw. in Kategorien. Anthropologische Untersuchungen zeigen, dass Taxonomien in örtliche, kulturelle und soziale Systeme eingebettet sind und verschiedenen sozialen Zwecken dienen. Eine der bekanntesten und einflussreichsten Studien von Laien-Taxonomien (folk taxonomies) ist Émile Durkheims The Elementary Forms of Religious Life.

Taksonomia (gr. taktis=układ, porządek + nomos=prawo) - nauka o zasadach i metodach klasyfikowania w szczególności o tworzeniu i opisywaniu jednostek systematycznych – taksonów. Niekiedy słowem tym określa się sam podział systematyczny (np. taksonomia roślin). Termin "taksonomia" - początkowo zdefiniowany przez De Candolle'a (1813) jako nauka o teorii klasyfikacji organizmów żywych - jest bliskoznaczny do terminu systematyka, który w pierwotnej definicji odnosił się do zastosowań praktycznych tej klasyfikacji. W 1969 Ernst Mayr zdefiniował taksonomię jako teorię i praktykę klasyfikacji. Obecnie powszechne są tendencje do utożsamiania tych terminów oraz używania (z wyjątkiem Stanów Zjednoczonych) terminu systematyka.

Taxonomie of ordening is de wetenschap van het indelen. Taxonomie (taxon=groep) verwijst naar zowel de classificatie van dingen als naar de methode die aan de basis van deze classificatie ligt. Vrijwel alles kan overigens taxonomisch worden ingedeeld: levende wezens, plantengemeenschappen, dingen, plaatsen, gebeurtenissen, enzovoort.
