A taxon (plural taxa), or taxonomic unit, is a name designating an organism or group of organisms. A taxon is assigned a rank and can be placed at a particular level in a systematic hierarchy reflecting evolutionary relationships.A distinction is to be made between taxa/taxonomy and classification/systematics. The former refers to biological names and the rules of naming. The latter refers to rank ordering of taxa according to presumptive evolutionary (phylogenetic) relationships. Als Taxon (das, Plural: Taxa; zu griech. τάξις (táxis) ‚(An-)Ordnung, Rang’) bezeichnet man in der Biologie eine als systematische Einheit erkannte Gruppe von Lebewesen. Meist drückt sich diese Systematik auch durch einen eigenen Namen für diese Gruppe aus. Die Regeln der Bildung wissenschaftlicher Namen für Taxa ist Inhalt des entsprechenden  nomenklatorischen Codes, die Einordnung nach dem Grad der Verwandtschaft in das entsprechende hierarchische System die Aufgabe der Taxonomie, die sich wiederum auf die Ergebnisse der biologischen Systematik stützt. Unterschiedliche systematische Vorstellungen führen zu unterschiedlichen taxonomischen Ansätzen und damit zu alternativen Ergebnissen bei der wissenschaftlichen Benennung von Taxa. Aus traditionellen Gründen erhalten diese bis heute an die lateinische oder griechische Sprache angelehnte Namen.

Takson, jednostka taksonomiczna - grupa organizmów (populacji) na tyle do siebie podobnych i wyróżniających się konkretną cechą, na tyle charakterystyczną, że na tej podstawie można je zaszeregować do konkretnej kategorii systematycznej. Omawiając takson należy pamiętać, że nazwa ta odnosi się do ściśle określonej grupy osobników, np. skowronków (takson skowronek w randze gatunku) lub kotowatych (takson kotowate w randze rodziny). Kategoria gatunek nie jest taksonem, ale gatunek do niej zaklasyfikowany - jest.
