The Ainu, the indigenous people of Japan, wore facial tattoos. Tattooing was widespread among Polynesian peoples, and among certain tribal groups in the Philippines, Borneo, Mentawai Islands, Africa, North America, South America, Mesoamerica, Europe, Japan, Cambodia, and China. Despite some taboos surrounding tattooing, the art continues to be popular all over the world, including a large trend emerging in Australia

Eine Tätowierung (wissenschaftlich auch Tatauierung, umgangssprachlich (engl.) Tattoo) ist ein Motiv, das mit Tinte oder anderen Farbpigmenten in die Haut eingebracht wird. Dazu wird die Farbe in der Regel mit Hilfe einer Tätowiermaschine durch eine oder mehrere Nadeln (je nach gewünschtem Effekt) unter die oberste Hautschicht gestochen und dabei ein Bild oder Text gezeichnet. Die Tätowierung stellt eine Form der Körpermodifikation dar.
