Tartan is a pattern consisting of crisscrossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colours. Tartans originated in woven cloth, but are now used in many other materials. Tartan is particularly associated with Celtic countries, especially Scotland. Scottish kilts almost always have tartan patterns. (Tartan is also known as plaid in North America, but in Scotland this word means a tartan cloth slung over the shoulder or a blanket.)

Ein Tartan ist ein spezielles Webmuster für Stoffe, das in der Neuzeit häufig repräsentativ für die Zugehörigkeit zu einem Schottischen Clan genutzt wird. Das für Tartans typische Karomuster ("Schottenkaros") entsteht beim Weben durch Verwendung von unterschiedlich farbigen Fäden. Tartans werden heute vornehmlich für Kilts und andere "schottische" Kleidungsstücke verwendet.

Tartan – tkanina zwykle z wełny owczej, o kraciastym wzorze utworzonym z krzyżujących się różnej szerokości i barwy pasów przebiegających w takim samym porządku zarówno wzdłuż osnowy jak i wątku. W klasycznej szkockiej kracie zespół pasków zostaje w sposób lustrzany odwzorowany w pionie i poziomie. W niektórych szkockich kratach (np. tartanie Jukonu) zamiast lustrzanego odbicia stosuje się zwykłe kopiowanie, lub (w kracie zwanej American with eagle) wprowadza się dodatkowe prążki burzące symetrię. Jest to najbardziej charakterystyczny wizualny wyróżnik identyfikujący, wraz z godłem (Badge), zawołaniem wojennym i marszem klanowym przynależność do konkretnego  klanu szkockiego.

Il tartan è un particolare disegno dei tessuti in lana delle Highland scozzesi. Il kilt, il tipico gonnellino scozzese, è realizzato in tartan.Questo disegno (in Italia si chiama scozzese) è ottenuto con fili di colori diversi che si ripetono con uno schema definito, uguale sia nell'ordito che nella trama. L'armatura del telaio per tessere il tartan è la saia.Non si conosce l'inizio dell'uso di tessere la lana con questo disegno nelle Highland ma sicuramente è molto antico, simbolo di identità nazionale estremamente diffuso nel XVII e XVIII secolo.
