Tantra (, "loom, warp"; hence "principle, system, doctrine, theory", from the verbal root "stretch, extend, expand", and the suffix "instrument"), anglicised as tantrism or tantricism, is the name scholars give to a style of religious ritual and meditation that arose in medieval India no later than the fifth century CE, and which came to influence all forms of Asian religious expression to a greater or lesser degree. Strictly speaking, this usage of the word "tantra" is a scholarly invention, but it is justifiable on the basis of the fact that the scriptures that present these practices are generally known as "tantras", regardless of which religion they belong to.

Tantra (Sanskrit, n., „Gewebe, Kontinuum, Zusammenhang“) ist eine Strömung innerhalb der  indischen Philosophie, entstanden als zunächst esoterische Form des Hinduismus und später des Buddhismus (vgl. Vajrayana) innerhalb der nördlichen Mahayana-Tradition. Die Ursprünge des Tantra beginnen im 2. Jahrhundert, in voller Ausprägung liegt die Lehre jedoch frühestens ab dem 7./8. Jahrhundert vor. Im Buddhismus ist auch der Begriff Tantrayana gebräuchlich (, „Fahrzeug der Tantra-Texte“).

À partir du , on rencontre des cultes tantriques dans les écoles shivaïtes ou shaktistes, dans le bouddhisme mahâyâna et dans le bouddhisme vajrayāna (ou bouddhisme tantrique) pratiqué principalement au Tibet et en Mongolie.

Byt ten jest rozumiany najczęściej jako forma czystej świadomości (w buddyzmie tybetańskim jest to jedność świadomości i pustości).
