For the tabloids that report on sensationalistic stories, see supermarket tabloids A tabloid is a newspaper industry term which refers to a smaller newspaper format per spread; to a weekly or semi-weekly alternative newspaper that focuses on local-interest stories and entertainment, often distributed for free (often in a smaller, tabloid-sized newspaper format); or to a newspaper that tends to emphasise sensational crime stories, gossip columns repeating scandalous innuendos about the personal lives of celebrities and sports stars, and other so-called "junk food news" (often in a smaller, tabloid-sized newspaper format). As the term "Tabloid" has become synonymous with down-market newspapers in some areas, some papers refer to themselves as "Compact" newspapers instead.

Le format tabloïd est l'un des plus petits formats couramment adoptés par les titres de la presse écrite de par le monde. Né en Grande-Bretagne, où le mot tabloid ne prend pas de tréma, il impose à chaque page une dimension de 410 X 290 mm (ou 374 X 289) millimètres.

La presse people, expression franglaise, ou la presse à scandale est une catégorie de publications traitant de l'actualité des gens célèbres (people en anglais), essentiellement au moyen de reportages photographiques. On parle parfois de tabloïd, à tort, car le tabloïd est un type de format de journal - traitant généralement de l'actualité des personnes publiques, mais pas obligatoirement.

Eine Boulevardzeitung ist ein periodisch in hoher Auflage erscheinendes Druckerzeugnis, dem nur eingeschränkte Seriosität zugeschrieben wird. Die ersten Vertreter der Gattung waren nur auf der Straße (Boulevard) käuflich zu erhalten, nicht im Abonnement (vgl. hierzu auch Kaufzeitung). Anknüpfend an die Boulevardzeitung hat sich der Begriff Boulevardjournalismus etabliert, der heute eine eigene Gattung im Journalismus bezeichnet.

Tabloid (z ang. tabloid), brukowiec, bulwarówka - typ gazety, przeważnie dziennika, a także specjalny format edycyjny (ok. 37-40 cm x ok. 27-30 cm). Początkowo termin "tabloid" oznaczał silną, skondensowaną tabletkę. Później nazwą tą zaczęto nazywać specyficzny rodzaj pisma w formacie nieco mniejszym od rozmiarów tradycyjnych gazet, dzięki czemu można je czytać zarówno w tramwaju, jak i w poczekalni u lekarza. Dzięki łatwo przyswajalnemu językowi i stosunkowo niskiej cenie trafia przede wszystkim do mało wymagających czytelników. Początki tego rodzaju wydawnictw sięgają  XIX-wiecznych tzw. "penny-press". W Europie pierwsze tabloidy pojawiły się na Wyspach Brytyjskich, gdzie zyskały ogromną popularność.

Tabloid è un termine usato nel campo dell'editoria che può essere riferito a giornali con poca diffusione, a periodici alternativi settimanali o semi-settimanali incentrati su notizie locali o sul mondo dello spettacolo, spesso distribuiti gratis, in formato più piccolo rispetto alle taglie standard (per questo motivo è infatti nato il termine formato tabloid); o può essere riferito a giornali che tendono ad enfatizzare notizie sul crimine, rubriche di cronaca rosa e gossip ripetendo e creando pathos sulle vite personali delle celebrità; ed altre notizie dal tono informale.
