Tobacco is an agricultural product processed from the fresh leaves of plants in the genus Nicotiana.Tobacco has been growing on the American Continent since about 6000 BC and began being used by native cultures at about 3000 BC. It has been smoked in one form or another since about 2000 BC. There are pictoral drawings of ancient Mayans smoking crude cigars from 1400 BC. Tobacco has a very long history of use in Native American culture and played an important part in the foundation of the United States of America, going back to colonial times and the original Jamestown settlement.

Tabak (Nicotiana) ist eine Pflanzengattung aus der Familie der Nachtschattengewächse (Solanaceae), zu der unter anderem auch die Tomate, Kartoffel und Tollkirsche gehören. Tabak gelangte mit der Entdeckung Amerikas in die damals bekannte Welt. Der französische Gesandte in Portugal Jean Nicot sorgte für die Einführung des Tabaks als Heilpflanze in Frankreich, nach ihm wurde später der wichtigste Inhaltsstoff Nikotin benannt. Heutzutage sind 65 Nicotiana-Arten bekannt. Die Tabakpflanzen erzeugen in den Wurzeln das Alkaloid Nikotin, welches sie in den Blättern einlagern und das dort der Abwehr von Fraßinsekten dient. Nikotin kommt aber auch z.B. in der Aubergine vor. Durch den hohen Gehalt an Nikotin wird Tabak heute als Droge eingestuft, früher jedoch ausschließlich als Genussmittel.

Tabacco è il termine generico con cui si fa riferimento ad un genere di piante a foglia corta appartenente alla famiglia delle Solanacee originariamente diffuse nel Nord e Sudamerica. Il nome tabacco viene usato anche per parlare delle foglie raccolte ed essiccate di queste piante.
