Synthpop (also known as electropop, or technopop) is a genre of popular music that first became prominent in the 1980s, in which the synthesizer is the dominant musical instrument. It was prefigured in the 1960s and early 1970s by the use of synthesizers in progressive rock, electronic art rock, disco and particularly the "Kraut rock" of bands like Kraftwerk. It arose as a distinct genre in Japan and the United Kingdom in the post-punk era as part of the New Wave movement of the late-1970s to the mid-1980s.

Synthie Pop (auch Synth-Pop oder Synthie-Pop) bezeichnet eine in den 1970er Jahren aufgekommene Stilrichtung innerhalb der Popmusik, deren wesentliches Merkmal die Verwendung elektronischer Instrumente-Synthesizer als Stilelement ist. Hierbei sollten traditionelle Instrumente nicht einfach durch elektronische ersetzt werden (was schon durch die damals astronomischen Preise und Größe der Geräte undenkbar war). Stattdessen wurde als Versuch damit begonnen, neue künstlerische Wege der Klanggestaltung und Stilschaffung zu gehen.

Appelé aussi Electro-pop ou Techno-pop, le synthpop est un genre musical qui privilégie l'utilisation de synthétiseurs dans une formation musicale pop. Ses principaux représentants proviennent essentiellement de Grande-Bretagne pendant les années 1980. Ce genre est lui-même une sous-tendance du genre New Wave. En France, il est plus communément désigné par les appellations « new wave » ou « electro-pop » , voire par des raccourcis très sommaires et simplificateurs comme « Années 80 » ou « 80’s » en anglais...

Synth pop (lub synthpop; z ang. synthesizer pop - "pop syntezatorowy") to odmiana muzyki popularnej, charakteryzująca się szerokim wykorzystaniem syntezatorów, automatów perkusyjnych oraz rozmaitych efektów elektronicznych. Cechą charakterystyczną, tak samo jak w innych odmianach muzyki popularnej jest melodyjność oraz często tematyka miłosna przejawiająca się w tekstach.
