synchrotron radiation

Synchrotron radiation is electromagnetic radiation, similar to cyclotron radiation, but generated by the acceleration of ultrarelativistic  (i.e., moving near the speed of light) charged particles through magnetic fields. This may be achieved artificially by storage rings in a synchrotron, or naturally by fast moving electrons moving through magnetic fields in space. The radiation typically includes radio waves, infrared light, visible light, ultraviolet light, and x-rays.

Als Synchrotron-Strahlung bezeichnet man die elektromagnetischen Wellen, die tangential zur Bewegungsrichtung von leichten, geladenen, relativistischen Teilchen (Elektronen oder Positronen) austreten, wenn sie durch ein Magnetfeld abgelenkt werden. Da die Ablenkung im physikalischen Sinne eine Beschleunigung (Änderung des Geschwindigkeitsvektors) darstellt, handelt es sich um eine besondere Form der Bremsstrahlung.

Promieniowanie synchrotronowe jest promieniowaniem elektromagnetycznym podobnym do promieniowania cyklotronowego, lecz generowanym przez naładowane cząstki (głównie elektrony) poruszające się z prędkością bliską prędkości światła w polu magnetycznym w wyniku czego są przyspieszane po krzywoliniowych torach. Można je uzyskać sztucznie w pierścieniach akumulacyjnych synchrotronów lub naturalnie w wyniku szybkiego ruchu elektronów przez pola magnetyczne w przestrzeni kosmicznej. Promieniowanie synchrotronowe zawiera typowo pasma podczerwone, widzialne, ultrafioletu oraz X.

Synchrotronstraling is de straling die vrijkomt in het middenvlak (equatoriale vlak) van een synchrotron. De fotonen worden uitgestraald in de bewegingsrichting van de elementaire deeltjes (meestal elektronen) in het synchrotron, en komen langs de raaklijn (tangentieel) aan de ring naar buiten. Volgens de wetten van Maxwell moeten elektrisch geladen deeltjes die afgebogen worden, elektromagnetische golven uitzenden. Dit effect treedt behalve in synchrotrons ook op in sterke magneetvelden in het heelal, bijvoorbeeld bij de zon en de Krabnevel.
