A symptom (from Greek σύμπτωμα, "accident, misfortune, that which befalls", from συμπίπτω, "I befall", from συν- "together, with" + πίπτω, "I fall") is a departure from normal function or feeling which is noticed by a patient, indicating the presence of disease or abnormality. A symptom is subjective, observed by the patient, and cannot be measured directly.

Ein Symptom (griechisch σύμπτωμα symptoma „Zufall, Begebenheit, Begleiterscheinung“ von syn „zusammen“, pípto „fallen“, dazu das Substantiv ptoma „Fall“ ) ist in der Medizin bzw. der Psychologie ein Zeichen, das auf eine Erkrankung oder Verletzung hinweist. Es kann durch einen Arzt bzw. Psychologen erfasst worden sein (Befund) oder auch vom Patienten selbst erfahren werden (Beschwerde). Die Gesamtheit der aus einem Krankheitsprozess resultierenden Symptome ergibt das klinische Bild, die Symptomatik. Symptome können in subjektive (durch den Betroffenen wahrnehmbare) und intersubjektive (von außen wahrnehmbare) Krankheitszeichen unterteilt werden. Letztere werden auch klinische Zeichen genannt.

Un symptôme représente une des manifestations subjectives d'une maladie ou d'un processus pathologique, tel qu'exprimé par le patient. En général, pour une pathologie donnée, les symptômes sont multiples.

Symtom eller symptom är tecken på ett underliggande, oftast sjukligt eller oönskat tillstånd som upplevs och uttrycks av patienten själv, (benämns därför ibland subjektiva symtom). Ej att förväxla med fynd som observeras utifrån eller baseras på mätningar med mera. Om flera olika symtom tenderar att förekomma samtidigt sägs de tillsammans utgöra ett syndrom.
