Multichannel audio is the name for a variety of techniques for expanding and enriching the sound of audio playback by recording additional sound channels that can be reproduced on additional speakers. Surround sound refers to the application of multichannel audio to channels "surrounding" the audience (generally some combination of left surround, right surround, and back surround) as opposed to "screen channels" (center, [front] left, and [front] right).

En audiophonie, le 5.1 désigne un système de reproduction phonique à six canaux. Chaque canal est matérialisé par une enceinte spécifique. Le chiffre 5 de 5.1 correspond aux 5 enceintes qui sont souvent désignées par le terme "satellite" et qui sont généralement de petite taille. Seul le caisson de basse, qui correspond au chiffre 1 de 5.1, peut avoir une taille importante ; on l'appelle aussi subwoofer.

5.1 - system zapisu dźwięku znany także jako Dolby Digital Surround. 5.1 oznacza pięć głośników (przednie: lewy, prawy i centralny, oraz tylne: lewy i prawy) + subwoofer. W systemie 5.1 zapisywane są najczęściej dźwięki na ścieżkach filmów DVD oraz muzyka na płytach formatu DVD audio. Powoduje on wrażenie dźwięku przestrzennego nieograniczonego do sceny przed słuchaczem ale też za nim oraz po bokach. W odróżnieniu od analogowego systemu Dolby Pro Logic, występują tu nie 4 zależne od siebie kanały ale 6 całkowicie odseparowanych od siebie kanałów. 5.1 (wyjątkiem jest DTS którego 6-ty kanał nisko-tonowy jest powiązany z centralnym głośnikiem układu audio). Dolby Digital jak i DTS są systemami całkowicie cyfrowymi. Ich całkowity odbiór jest osiągalny przy korzystaniu z dekodera AC3 5.1. Wszystkie odtwarzacze DVD są kompatybilne z systemem dolby digital ale nie wszystkie dekodują go bezstratnie (tanie odtwarzacze DVD przekształcają Sygnał 5.1 do 2.0.).
