It is an abundant, tasteless, multivalent non-metal. Sulfur, in its native form, is a yellow crystalline solid. In nature, it can be found as the pure element or as sulfide and sulfate minerals. It is an essential element for life and is found in two amino acids, cysteine and methionine. Its commercial uses are primarily in fertilizers, but it is also widely used in gunpowder, matches, insecticides and fungicides.

Er verbrennt an der Luft mit blauer Flamme und erzeugt dabei stechend riechendes Schwefeldioxid. Schwefel ist für Lebewesen ein essentielles Element. È un nonmetallo inodore, insapore, molto abbondante; la sua forma più nota e comune è quella cristallina di colore giallo intenso; è presente sotto forma di solfuri e solfati in molti minerali, e si ritrova spesso puro nelle regioni con vulcani attivi. È un elemento essenziale per tutti gli esseri viventi, dove è presente in molti amminoacidi, e di conseguenza in quasi tutte le proteine. In campo industriale si usa soprattutto per ricavarne fertilizzanti, ma anche per polvere da sparo, lassativi, insetticidi e fungicidi.
