Succulent plants, also known as succulents or fat plants, are water-retaining plants adapted to arid climate or soil conditions. Succulent plants store water in their leaves, stems and/or roots. The storage of water often gives succulent plants a more swollen or fleshy appearance than other plants, also known as succulence. In addition to succulence, succulent plants variously have other water-saving features. Les plantes succulentes sont des plantes charnues, également appelées « plantes grasses », qui sont adaptées pour survivre dans des milieux arides du fait des caractéristiques du sol, du climat ou à forte concentration en sel. Dans ce dernier cas, on parle de plantes halophytes. Leur adaptation, différente de celles des plantes xérophytes proprement dites, est liée à leur capacité de stocker de l'eau dans les feuilles, les tiges ou les racines.

Sukkulenten (von lateinisch succus = Saft) sind saftreiche Pflanzen, die an besondere Klima- und Bodenverhältnisse angepasst sind. Im Bereich der Anatomie wird flüssigkeitsreiches Gewebe als sukkulent bezeichnet.

Sukulenty, rośliny gruboszowate - grupa kserofitów, czyli roślin, które przystosowały się do życia w warunkach bardzo gorących dzięki możliwości magazynowania wody w różnych tkankach. Rośliny gruboszowate odznaczają się mocno rozwiniętą tkanką magazynującą wodę w śluzowatym soku komórkowym, redukcją liści, małą transpiracją, ciśnieniem osmotycznym (2-3 atmosfer) oraz wolną produkcją materii organicznej. Przystosowane są do bezpośredniego pobierania wody deszczowej.

Een succulent of vetplant is een plant die water opslaat in een deel van zijn lichaam. Dit kan zowel in de wortel, stengel of het blad gebeuren en dan spreekt men respectievelijk van knol-, stam of bladsucculenten.Er bestaan tientallen plantenfamilies die succulente soorten hebben, sommige bestaan bijna alleen uit succulenten, andere hebben slechts enkele succulente soorten. Het meest beroemd zijn waarschijnlijk de cactussen, die allemaal tot dezelfde plantenfamilie behoren. Alle andere succulente plantenfamilies worden dan meestal verzameld onder de naam succulenten, 'de rest' om zo te zeggen. Onder die noemer zit ook de plantenfamilie van de middagbloemen (Aizoaceae) die op zich misschien méér soorten bevatten dan alle andere succulenten tezamen, als we de cactussen buiten beschouwing laten.
