The hypodermis, also called the hypoderm, subcutaneous tissue, or superficial fascia is the lowermost layer of the integumentary system in vertebrates. (Hypoderm and subcutaneous are from Greek and Latin words, respectively, for "beneath the skin.")Types of cells that are found in the hypodermis are fibroblasts, adipose cells, and macrophages. It is derived from the mesoderm, but unlike the dermis, it is not derived from the dermatome region of the mesoderm. In arthropods, the hypodermis is an epidermal layer of cells that secretes the chitinous cuticle. The term also refers to a layer of cells lying immediately below the epidermis of plants. This cell is also used to supervise the outer skin from burns and other such articulates.

Die Subkutis (lat. Subcutis, dt. Unterhaut), auch Subdermis oder Subkutangewebe genannt, ist jenes unter der Haut (auch Cutis genannt) liegende Gewebe, welches aus zwischen den Bindegewebssepten liegendem Fettgewebe und den die Haut versorgenden Blutgefäßen und Nerven besteht. Sie wird auch als Hypoderm oder Tela subcutanea bezeichnet.

Subcutaan (Latijn: sub- :onder, cutis: huid) is de term die wordt gebruikt bij het toedienen van onderhuidse injecties. Hierna zal de stof langzaam in het bloed worden opgenomen. Er wordt gebruik gemaakt van een korte naald die geplaatst wordt in een plooi in de huid die met de vingers wordt gemaakt. De buik is hiervoor erg geschikt. Een voorbeeld hiervan is de toediening van insuline door diabetici. Naast subcutaan zijn er nog andere vormen van injectie: intraveneus (direct in de bloedbaan) en intramusculair (in het spierweefsel). Intradermale injectie (in de lederhuid) wordt gebruikt voor bv lokale anesthesie (en voor tatoeage).
