subatomic particle

A subatomic particle is an elementary or composite particle smaller than an atom. Particle physics and nuclear physics are concerned with the study of these particles, their interactions, and non-atomic matter composed from them.Subatomic particles include the atomic constituents electrons, protons, and neutrons. Protons and neutrons are composite particles, consisting of quarks. A proton contains two up quarks and one down quark, while a neutron consists of one up quark and two down quarks; the quarks are held together in the nucleus by gluons. There are six different types of quark in all ('up', 'down', 'bottom', 'top', 'strange', and 'charm'), as well as other particles including photons and neutrinos which are produced copiously in the sun. Most of the particles that have been discovered are encountered in cosmic rays interacting with matter and are produced by scattering processes in particle accelerators. There are dozens of subatomic particles.

Een subatomair deeltje is een deeltje dat kleiner is dan het atoom. Sommige subatomaire deeltjes kunnen deel uitmaken van atomen, andere worden alleen in het laboratorium, in sterren of in andere buitengewone omstandigheden gevormd. De deeltjes zijn kleiner dan 1 fm (10–15 m). Ze worden bestudeerd door de deeltjesfysica.

物理学において素粒子（そりゅうし）とは、物質を構成する最小の単位のことである。 最小の単位であるということは、それより小さな存在がないということであり、従って内部構造を持たず空間的な大きさを持たないとされるが、超弦理論においては全ての素粒子は有限な大きさを持つひもの振動状態であるとされる。 現在物質を構成する素粒子と考えられているものは、クォークとレプトンである。これらに内部構造が存在することが発見されれば、その内部構造を構成するものが素粒子と呼ばれることになる。たくさんの粒子が、実は自然界にそのまま安定的に存在しているわけではないので、宇宙線の観測や加速器による生成反応により発見・研究された。素粒子の様々な性質を実験で調べ、それを理論的に体系化していくこと、及び理論的に予言される素粒子を実験で探索していくことが、素粒子物理学の研究目的である。
