Structure is a fundamental, tangible or intangible notion referring to the recognition, observation, nature, and permanence of patterns and s of entities. This notion may itself be an object, such as a built structure, or an attribute, such as the structure of society. From a child's verbal description of a snowflake, to the detailed scientific analysis of the properties of magnetic fields, the concept of structure is now often an essential foundation of nearly every mode of inquiry and discovery in science, philosophy, and art. In early 20th-century and earlier thought, form often plays a role comparable to that of structure in contemporary thought. The neo-Kantianism of Ernst Cassirer (cf. his Philosophy of Symbolic Forms, completed in 1929 and published in English translation in the 1950s) is sometimes regarded as a precursor of the later shift to structuralism and poststructuralism.

Unter Struktur (von lat.: structura = ordentliche Zusammenfügung, Bau, Zusammenhang; bzw. lat.: struere = schichten, zusammenfügen) versteht man das Muster von Systemelementen und ihrer Wirk-Beziehungen (Relationen) untereinander, also die Art und Weise, wie die Elemente eines Systems aufeinander bezogen sind (durch Beziehungen „verbunden“ sind), so dass ein System bzw. Organismus funktioniert (entsteht und sich erhält).

Une structure décrit :

1. d'une manière générale, la façon dont les éléments participants d'un système sont organisés entre eux.
   Un phénomène est dit structurel (opposé à conjoncturel) s'il est inhérent au mode d"organisation d'un système, d'une société.
2. en construction, un assemblage d'éléments structuraux, c'est-à-dire porteurs, qui assure l'intégrité d'une construction et le maintien des éléments non structuraux (équipements, garnissage…).
   Un élément est dit structural s'il a pour fonction de participer au drainage des charges mécaniques apportées par les éléments supportés.

Structuur is de manier waarop iets in elkaar zit, waarop elementen van een verzameling samenhangen. Niet alle verzamelingen hoeven geheel of gedeeltelijk samenhangend te zijn, maar in een structuur is er een verband tussen alle elementen. Dat verband wordt bepaald door relaties tussen elementen onderling. Niet alle elementen hoeven daarbij met elk afzonderlijk element verbonden te zijn.
