Stroke
A stroke, or cerebrovascular accident (CVA), is the rapid loss of brain function(s) due to disturbance in the blood supply to the brain. This can be due to ischemia (lack of blood flow) caused by blockage (thrombosis, arterial embolism), or a hemorrhage (leakage of blood). As a result, the affected area of the brain cannot function, which might result in an inability to move one or more limbs on one side of the body, inability to understand or formulate speech, or an inability to see one side of the visual field.

Schlaganfall
Als Schlaganfall (auch Gehirnschlag, zerebraler Insult, apoplektischer Insult, Apoplexia cerebri, in der medizinischen Umgangssprache häufig verkürzend auch Apoplex oder Insult) wird eine plötzlich auftretende Erkrankung des Gehirns bezeichnet, die oft zu einem anhaltenden Ausfall von Funktionen des Zentralnervensystems führt und durch kritische Störungen der Blutversorgung des Gehirns verursacht wird.

Udar mózgu
Udar mózgu (dawniej także apopleksja, z gr. = "paść jak rażony piorunem"; łac. apoplexia cerebri, insultus cerebri, ang. cerebro-vascular accident, CVA) – nagłe ogniskowe lub uogólnione zaburzenie czynności mózgu powstałe w wyniku zaburzenia krążenia mózgowego i utrzymujące się ponad 24 godziny.
Udar mózgu może być krwotoczny (wywołany wylewem krwi do mózgu) lub niedokrwienny (wywołany zatrzymaniem dopływu krwi do mózgu), przy czym udar niedokrwienny może być również wtórnie ukrwotoczniony. Do udarów krwotocznych zalicza się krwotoki śródmózgowe i krwawienia podpajęczynówkowe.
Objawy udaru zależą od lokalizacji miejsca uszkodzenia. W wielu przypadkach udar mózgu jest stanem zagrażającym życiu, jako zaburzenie wymaga bezwzględnie hospitalizacji, najlepiej na wyspecjalizowanym oddziale udarowym.
