stellar classification

In astronomy, stellar classification is a classification of stars based initially on photospheric temperature and its associated spectral characteristics, and subsequently refined in terms of other characteristics. Stellar temperatures can be classified by using Wien's displacement law, but this poses difficulties for distant stars. Stellar spectroscopy offers a way to classify stars according to their absorption lines; particular absorption lines can be observed only for a certain range of temperatures because only in that range are the involved atomic energy levels populated. An early scheme (from the 19th century) ranked stars from A to Q, which is the origin of the currently used spectral classes.

Die Spektralklasse in der Astronomie ist eine Klassifikation der Sterne nach dem Aussehen ihres Spektrums.Dabei beruht das System auf der Entdeckung von Joseph von Fraunhofer im Jahr 1813, der im Sonnenspektrum dunkle Absorptionslinien fand. Robert Wilhelm Bunsen und Gustav Robert Kirchhoff entdeckten 1859, dass diese Linien von der Lage her identisch sind mit Emissionslinien, die von bestimmten chemischen Elementen abgegeben werden.

W astronomii typ widmowy to klasyfikacja gwiazd oparta na widmie światła wysyłanego przez gwiazdę w niebieskiej części. Widmo światła emitowanego przez gwiazdę jest określone przez trzy podstawowe parametry zewnętrznych warstw gwiazdy, a mianowicie:ich temperaturę,ciśnienie gazu,skład chemiczny. Z powyższych czynników największy wpływ na postać widma gwiazdowego ma temperatura. Widma gwiazd o niskiej temperaturze powierzchni świadczą o obecności tam prostych związków chemicznych. Wraz ze wzrostem temperatury spada liczba cząstek i atomy ulegają jonizacji.

La classificazione stellare è generalmente basata sulla temperatura superficiale delle stelle, che può essere stimata mediante la Legge di Wien a partire dalla loro emissione luminosa. La spettroscopia permette in aggiunta di classificare le stelle a seconda delle linee di assorbimento che presentano: certe linee di assorbimento possono essere osservate solo in un certo intervallo di temperatura, perché solo in quelle temperature i corrispondenti livelli energetici degli atomi sono popolati.
