A steam locomotive is a railway locomotive that produces its power through a steam engine. These locomotives are fueled by burning some combustible material, usually coal, wood or oil, to produce steam in a boiler, which drives the steam engine. Both fuel and water supplies are carried with the locomotive, either on the locomotive itself or in wagons pulled behind.

Die Dampflokomotive (kurz Dampflok) ist eine Bauform der Lokomotive, die mit Hilfe von Wasserdampf angetrieben wird. Neben der weit verbreiteten Regelbauart mit Dampferzeuger und Kolbendampfmaschinen gibt es Sonderbauarten wie feuerlose Lokomotiven, Zahnradlokomotiven, solche mit Einzelachsantrieb, Turbinen-, Kondens- und Hochdrucklokomotiven.

Les premières locomotives (au ) étaient propulsées par une machine à vapeur, ce qui leur a valu le nom de locomotives à vapeur. Ce type de traction des trains est resté largement prépondérant jusqu'aux années 1950, après la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

Ånglok är ett lokomotiv för järnväg eller spårväg med en ångmaskin som motor. Ångloket var den första användbara loktypen men används inte längre kommersiellt i industriländer. I vissa utvecklingsländer finns ånglok i drift, och dessutom finns de vid museijärnvägar för passagerartrafik eller godstransport. I Storbritannien finns fortfarande Flying Scotsman kvar i drift och i Sverige tuffar de gamla ångloken fortfarande på olika museibanor och järnvägsmuséer. I Tyskland anordnas "Plandampf" där vissa ordinarie tåg ersätts med ångloksdragna tåg.
