Staten Island (IPA: ) is a borough of New York City. Situated on an eponymous island, Staten Island is the most geographically separate and least populated of the five boroughs. The Borough of Staten Island is with Richmond County, the southernmost county in the state of New York. Until 1975 the borough was officially named the Borough of Richmond. With a population of about 477,377, Staten Island is sometimes called "the forgotten borough," as it is less well-known than other boroughs, namely Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and The Bronx. While Staten Island may not have the claim to fame of other boroughs, the Staten Island Ferry is a large tourist attraction and thus provides out-of-towners with some frame of reference for Staten Island. Staten Island - jedna z pięciu dzielnic Nowego Jorku mieszcząca się na wyspie o tej samej nazwie leżąca w cieśninie będącej wejściem do Zatoki Nowojorskiej. Pokrywa się z hrabstwem Richmond (najbardziej na południe wysuniętym hrabstwem stanu Nowy Jork). Jako dzielnica funkcjonuje od 1898 r. gdy doszło do reorganizacji Nowego Jorku jako miasta (m.in włączono wtedy Brooklyn w granice metropolii). Do 1975 r. dzielnica była znana jako Richmond.

De Staten (ook wel Stenden of Standen) waren een standenvergadering. In de staten waren de drie maatschappelijke lagen van de bevolking vertegenwoordigd, te weten: de adelde geestelijkheid de (gegoede) burgerij Elk graafschap of elk hertogdom, elke "staat" zouden wij nu zeggen, had zijn eigen Staten. In de Nederlanden kwamen deze samen in de Staten-Generaal, die meestal in Brussel werden samengeroepen wanneer de regerende gezagsdrager(s) weer eens in geldnood zat en een bede moest toegekend worden. Deze gelegenheden werden dan vaak benut om nieuwe vrijheden te bepleiten; een reden waarom de heersers van de Lage Landen niet happig waren de Staten-Generaal bijeen te roepen en zich eerder richtten tot de Staten van iedere provincie. Met het Plakkaat van Verlatinghe verklaarden de Staten in 1581 de vorst vervallen (verlaten) van zijn macht.

Ста́тен-А́йленд (, IPA: ) — один из пяти районов (borough) города Нью-Йорка, расположенный на одноимённом острове. Наиболее территориально удалённый и наименее населённый из всех районов Нью-Йорка. Самая южная часть штата Нью-Йорк; территориально совпадает с округом Ричмонд и поэтому вплоть до 1975 года назывался районом Ричмонд. Стал городским районом Нью-Йорка в 1898 году.
