State (country subdivision)
Most countries with a federal constitution are made up of a number of political divisions that are subnational entities called states or provinces, as contrasted with nation states. In many cases, these are creations of the national government, rather than sovereign states or Administrative divisions. In other cases, as with the U.S. states, the national government arose from a union of the states, which delegated some of their sovereignty to the national government, while retaining the remaining part of their sovereignty. They are sometimes called federal states.
