A star is a massive, luminous ball of plasma. Stars group together to form galaxies, and they dominate the visible universe. The nearest star to Earth is the Sun, which is the source of most of the energy on Earth, including daylight. Other stars are visible in the night sky, when they are not outshone by the Sun. A star shines because nuclear fusion in its core releases energy which traverses the star's interior and then radiates into outer space. Almost all elements heavier than hydrogen and helium were created inside the cores of stars.

Une étoile est une boule gazeuse d'une taille telle (plusieurs centaines de milliers de kilomètres) que sa région centrale — le cœur — atteint la température nécessaire (de l'ordre du million de kelvins au minimum) à l'amorçage de réactions de fusion nucléaire. Une étoile est donc un corps générant lui-même son rayonnement, au contraire des planètes (comme la Terre) qui ne font que recevoir l'énergie de l'étoile ou des étoiles autour desquelles elles gravitent. Pendant une grande partie de sa vie, avant que ses ressources d'énergie ne s'épuisent, une étoile est en équilibre hydrostatique sous l'action de deux forces qui s'opposent : la gravitation, qui tend à faire s'effondrer l'étoile, et la pression de radiation due aux réactions de fusion nucléaire, qui tend au contraire à faire exploser l'astre. Le Soleil est lui-même une étoile assez typique dont la masse, de l'ordre de , est représentative de celle des autres étoiles.

Der Begriff Heck bezeichnet den hinteren Teil eines Schiffes, Autos etc.Das Heck (niederdt.: heck "Umzäunung") war ursprünglich der für den Steuermann vorgesehene hintere erhöhte Teil eines Schiffes, der zum Schutz gegen hohe Wellen mit einer Verschanzung (Schanzkleid) umgeben war. Una stella è un corpo celeste che brilla di luce propria. Il termine in astronomia si riferisce propriamente ad un'enorme e luminosa sfera di plasma (gas fortemente ionizzato ad elevate temperature) che genera energia nel proprio nucleo attraverso dei processi di fusione nucleare; tale energia è irradiata nello spazio sotto forma di onde elettromagnetiche e neutrini. Buona parte degli elementi chimici più pesanti dell' idrogeno e dell' elio (i più abbondanti nell'Universo) vengono sintetizzati nei nuclei delle stelle tramite il processo di nucleosintesi.
