Le squat (de l'anglais « s'accroupir ») est l'action de s'installer illégalement dans un lieu inoccupé ; par extension, il s'agit aussi du lieu ainsi investi. A partir du XVIIe siècle, le terme squat apparaît pour désigner les occupations illicites de terres (sans titre légal de propriété et sans payer de redevance) par des paysans anglais, les Diggers. Le 1er avril 1649 aux alentours de Londres à lieu la première occupation connue, elle est menée par Gerrard Winstanley.
