Sport (or, in the United States, sports) is all forms of competitive physical activity which, through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical fitness and provide entertainment to participants. Hundreds of sports exist, from those requiring only two participants, through to those with hundreds of simultaneous participants, either in teams or competing as individuals.

Sport

Unter dem Begriff Sport werden verschiedene Bewegungs-, Spiel- und Wettkampfformen, die meist im Zusammenhang mit körperlichen Aktivitäten des Menschen stehen, zusammengefasst. Das Wort wurde im 19. Jahrhundert aus dem englischen „sport“ entlehnt, das über das Französische auf das lateinische disportare („sich zerstreuen“) zurückgeht. Für Menschen die, in unterschiedlichsten Sportarten, Sport betreiben existiert auch die Bezeichnung Sportler. Als akademische Fachgebiete existieren Sportwissenschaft und Sportmedizin.

Sport är ett samlingsbegrepp för olika aktiviteter med tävlingsmoment. Sport kan utövas individuellt eller i lag. Den sport som antingen är störst i antalet utövare eller drar mest publik brukar kallas nationalsport. De flesta större sporterna har ett eget förbund. I de flesta sporter tävlar damer och herrar i olika indelningsklasser.

Sport - wg specjalistów - z nauk o wychowaniu fizycznym - są to rozmaite formy aktywności fizycznej i umysłowej, podejmowane dla przyjemności lub współzawodnictwa. Od "zwykłej rekreacji" ma go różnić przestrzeganie szeregu reguł obowiązujących w danej dyscyplinie.

Według mniej popularnej, ale bardziej, wewnętrznie spójnej definicji sport to każda forma aktywności (fizycznej i umysłowej) podejmowana w celu rywalizacji - zbiorowej lub indywidualnej, w różnych grach i dyscyplinach ale też "z samym sobą", np. w alpinizmie czy sportach ekstremalnych.

W ramach rekreacji, rozumianej tu jako odrębne pojęcie, brak jest elementu rywalizacji. Różne realizowane w jej ramach czynności, poza pracą czy nauką, są wykonywane w miejscu zamieszkania czy pobytu co różni ją z kolei od turystyki - podróży w celu poznawania świata i ludzi.
