Spheroid
A spheroid is a
quadric surface in three dimensions obtained by rotating an
ellipse about one of its principal axes. Three particular cases of a spheroid are:If the ellipse is rotated about its major axis, the surface is a prolate spheroid (similar to the shape of a
rugby ball). If the ellipse is rotated about its minor axis, the surface is an oblate spheroid (similar to the
shape of the planet Earth). If the generating ellipse is a circle, the surface is a sphere (completely symmetric).

Sphéroïde
Un sphéroïde ou ellipsoïde de rotation est une surface
quadrique en 3 dimensions obtenue par
rotation d'une
ellipse autour d'un de ses
axes principaux. Si l'ellipse tourne autour de son axe principal, la surface est appelée un sphéroïde prolate (similaire à la forme d'un ballon de
rugby). Si l'axe secondaire est choisi, la surface est appelée un sphéroïde oblate (similaire à la forme de la
Terre).

Rotationsellipsoid
Ein Rotationsellipsoid (auf Englisch "spheroid") ist ein
Ellipsoid, das durch die Drehung einer
Ellipse um eine ihrer Achsen entsteht. Im Gegensatz zu einem allgemeinen Ellipsoid sind zwei Achsen gleich lang. Man unterscheidet dabei je nach Länge der
Drehachse dasabgeplattete (oblate) Ellipsoid bei Rotation um die kleine Achse und dasverlängerte (prolate) Ellipsoid bei Rotation um die große Achse.Ein Beispiel für ein verlängertes Rotationsellipsoid ist die Form des
Rugby- oder
Footballs.

Sferoïde
Een sferoïde is een
kwadratisch oppervlak. Het is een omwentelingsfiguur van een
ellips. Een
ellipsoïde waarvan twee stralen gelijk zijn is een sferoïde. Als de twee gelijke stralen kleiner zijn dan de derde wordt ze een oblate sferoïde genoemd. Bij een prolate sferoïde zijn de twee gelijke stralen groter dan de derde.
