The sphenoid bone (from Greek sphenoeides, "wedgelike") is a bone situated at the base of the skull in front of the temporals and basilar part of the occipital bone. The sphenoid bone somewhat resembles a butterfly or bat with its wings extended.

Das Keilbein (Os sphenoidale) ist einer der Knochen des Hirnschädels. Es liegt relativ tief im mittleren Schädelbereich. Es formt, zusammen mit dem Hinterhauptsbein, die Schädelbasis sowie den hinteren Bereich der Augenhöhle (Orbita). Es gibt die Theorie, dass es ursprünglich Os sphecoidale (griechisch Wespe) genannt wurde und aufgrund eines Schreibfehlers zum Os sphenoidale (griechisch „Keil“) wurde. Das Keilbein sieht nämlich mit seinen Flügeln aus wie eine Wespe. Eine Keilform kann man diesem Knochen dagegen nur mit sehr viel Phantasie abgewinnen.

Kość klinowa (łac. os sphenoidale), nieparzysta kość, tworząca część środkową podstawy czaszki, jest wklinowana pomiędzy inne kości. Od przodu łączy się z kością czołową i kośćmi twarzy (z kością podniebienną, szczęką i z kością jarzmową), z boku z kośćmi skroniowymi, a z tyłu z kością potyliczną. Kość klinowa swoim kształtem przypomina motyla. Składa się z trzonu, ze skrzydeł większych i mniejszych oraz z wyrostków skrzydłowatych.
