Sound is a vibration that travels through an elastic medium as a wave. The speed of sound describes how much distance such a wave travels in a given amount of time. In dry air, at a temperature of 21 °C (70 °F) the speed of sound is 344 m/s (1238 km/h, or 769 mph, or 1128 ft/s).Although the term is commonly used to refer specifically to air, the speed of sound can be measured in virtually any material. The speed of sound in liquids and solids is much higher than that in air.

Premiera odbyła się 18 kwietnia 2005 roku, w BBC Radio 1, podczas audycji prowadzonej przez Steve'a Lamacqa w poniedziałkowy wieczór."Speed of Sound" zacięcie walczył o pierwsze miejsce na liście UK Singles Chart z nowatorską piosenką "Axel F", Crazy Froga. Poza tym utwór znalazł się na pierwszym miejscu najczęściej ściąganych dzwonków telefonicznych w Anglii. Dodatkowo piosenka jako pierwsza zespołu Coldplay znalazła się w dziesiątce listy Billboard Hot 100, będąc na miejscu #8, odnosząc największy sukces ze wszystkich singli zespołu.

Prędkość dźwięku w określonym ośrodku jest prędkością rozchodzenia się w nim zaburzenia mechanicznego.Prędkość dźwięku w substancjach zależy od prędkości przekazywania kolejnym cząsteczkom tej substancji prędkości cząsteczek zwiększonej ciśnieniem dźwięku. Dla małych natężeń dźwięku ta dodatkowa prędkość jest znacznie mniejsza od prędkości ruchu cieplnego cząsteczek, dlatego prędkość dźwięku nie zależy od jego natężenia.

"Speed of Sound" è il primo singolo estratto dall'album del 2005 dei Coldplay: X&Y. È stato trasmesso per la prima volta sulla BBC Radio 1 la sera di Lunedì 18 aprile 2005. Dopo un inzio con un riff di pianoforte, la canzone continua con il coro ripetuto più volte: "Birds go flying at the speed of sound, to show you how it all began / Birds came flying from the underground, if you could see it then you'd understand". La canzone riprende un brano di Kate Bush, "Running Up That Hill"; il riff di piano di Speed of Sound riprende quello della canzone della Bush.
