Speed metal is a sub-genre of heavy metal music that originated in the late 1970s from NWOBHM and hardcore punk roots. It is described by Allmusic as "extremely fast, abrasive, and technically demanding" music.

Speed Metal ist die Bezeichnung einer Unterart des Metal, die Anfang bis Mitte der 1980er Jahre in Kanada und Europa entstand und sich durch ihr hohes Tempo auszeichnet. Jedoch ist umstritten, ob Speed Metal als feste Genre-Bezeichnung betrachtet werden kann, da nur wenige Bands ausschließlich diesem zugeordnet werden können, oder ob er als Frühform und Untergenre des Thrash Metal anzusehen ist. Der Melodic Speed Metal stellt eine Variante des Speed Metal dar, die inzwischen als Power Metal bezeichnet wird.
