speculation

Speculation, in the narrow sense of financial speculation, involves the buying, holding, selling, and short-selling of stocks, bonds, commodities, currencies, collectibles, real estate, derivatives, or any valuable financial instrument to profit from fluctuations in its price as opposed to buying it for use or for income via methods such as dividends or interest. Speculation or agiotage represents one of three market roles in Western financial markets, distinct from hedging, long- or short-term investing, and arbitrage.

Spekulacja – jeden z rodzajów transakcji kupna-sprzedaży określonej rzeczy. Celem spekulacji jest osiągnięcie określonego dochodu poprzez wykorzystanie przewidywanych zmian cenowych w określonym czasie pomiędzy danym terminem zawarcia określonej umowy, a jej terminem realizacji. Przedmiotami tych transakcji są najczęściej dobra materialne, nieruchomości oraz papiery wartościowe. Cechą spekulacji, w odróżnieniu od np. arbitrażu jest niepewność.

La speculazione è l'attività dell'operatore che entra sul mercato nel momento presente, assumendo posizioni il cui esito, positivo o negativo, dipenderà dal verificarsi o meno di eventi aleatori su cui egli ha formulato delle aspettative. Se l'evento aleatorio si manifesterà in linea con le aspettative, l'operazione speculativa avrà esito positivo, cioè produrrà un profitto, nel caso contrario si avrà una perdita.
