A spectrometer is an optical instrument used to measure properties of light over a specific portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, typically used in spectroscopic analysis to identify materials. The variable measured is most often the light's intensity but could also, for instance, be the polarization state. The independent variable is usually the wavelength of the light, normally expressed as some fraction of a meter, but sometimes expressed as some unit directly proportional to the photon energy, such as wavenumber or electron volts, which has a reciprocal relationship to wavelength. A spectrometer is used in spectroscopy for producing spectral lines and measuring their wavelengths and intensities. Spectrometer is a term that is applied to instruments that operate over a very wide range of wavelengths, from gamma rays and X-rays into the far infrared.

Un spectromètre est un appareil de mesure permettant de décomposer une quantité observée — un faisceau lumineux en spectroscopie, ou bien un mélange de molécules par exemple en spectrométrie de masse — en ses éléments simples qui constituent son spectre. En optique, il s'agit d'obtenir les longueurs d'onde spécifiques constituant le faisceau lumineux (spectre électromagnétique) tandis que, pour un mélange chimique, il s'agira d'obtenir les masses spécifiques de chacune des molécules (spectre de masse). Des spectromètres sont également utilisés en acoustique afin d'analyser la composition d'un signal sonore. De façon générale l'étude des spectres est appelée la spectrométrie.

Ein Spektroskop ist ein optisches Gerät, mit dem Licht in sein Spektrum zerlegt wird und visuell untersucht werden kann. Wird das Licht auf einen Empfänger geleitet (Fotoplatte, CCD-Sensor etc.), spricht man von einem Spektrometer.Ein modernes Spektroskop besitzt einen Eingangs-Spalt, ein Objektiv und ein geradsichtiges Prisma aus Glas (oder ein entsprechendes Gitter). In das Gesichtsfeld wird meist auch eine Wellenlängenskala eingespiegelt. Seine moderne, fast geradsichtige Form erhielt das Spektroskop durch Angelo Secchi SJ um 1870.
