The illusions used in the film, television, and entertainment industries to simulate the imagined events in a story are traditionally called special effects (a.k.a. SFX or SPFX). In modern films, special effects are usually used to alter previously-filmed elements by adding, removing or enhancing objects within the scene. The use of special effects is more common in big-budget films, but affordable animation and compositing software enables even amateur filmmakers to create professional-looking effects.

Le terme d’effets spéciaux désigne l'ensemble des techniques utilisées au cinéma pour créer l’illusion d’actions et simuler des objets, des personnages ou des phénomènes qui n’existent pas dans la réalité ou qui ne pourraient pas être filmés au moment du tournage. On parle aussi de trucage.

Als Spezialeffekt (englisch special effects), auch Special FX (von englisch lautmalerisch „ef–eks“) oder kurz SPFX, oft auch kurz SFX doppeldeutig mit SFX (englisch „sound effects“ Soundeffekt ), werden mechanische Techniken bezeichnet, um bestimmte Effekte in Theater oder Film zu erzeugen. Im Gegensatz zu den Visual Effects (VFX) werden Spezialeffekte direkt am Drehort erzeugt und gefilmt. Damit ist das gewünschte Ergebnis sofort überprüfbar.

Gli effetti speciali sono un insieme di tecniche e tecnologie utilizzate nel cinema, nella televisione e nel teatro per simulare degli eventi altrimenti impossibili da rappresentare in maniera tradizionale, in quanto troppo costosi, pericolosi, o semplicemente contrari alle leggi della natura.Grazie agli effetti speciali, detti più semplicemente "trucchi" (ed indicati spesso con l'acronimo "SFX"), lo spettatore ha l'illusione ottica (e/o acustica) che un determinato evento stia accadendo, o sia accaduto, realmente.
