Spandex or elastane is a synthetic fiber known for its exceptional elasticity. It is stronger and more durable than rubber, its major non-synthetic competitor. It was invented in 1959 by DuPont chemist Joseph Shivers. When first introduced it revolutionized many areas of the clothing industry. It is one of the most used and best materials in lingerie. "Spandex" is a generic name and not derived from the chemical name of the fiber, which most manufactured fibers are, but derived by shifting around the syllables in the word expands. "Spandex" is the preferred name in North America; elsewhere it is referred to as "elastane".

Elastan, im englischen Sprachraum Spandex, ist eine äußerst dehnbare Kunstfaser. Sie ähnelt Gummi, hat aber eine höhere Festigkeit und ist haltbarer. Die ersten Fasern aus Elastan kamen 1959 als Fibre K auf den Markt, nachdem Joseph Shivers beim amerikanischen Chemiekonzern DuPont ein Verfahren zur großtechnischen Herstellung entwickelte. Es waren verklebte Multifilamentgarn aus Polyurethan. Ab 1962 wurde Fibre K in großen Mengen unter dem Markennamen Lycra vertrieben. Zwei Jahre später begann die Bayer AG mit der Herstellung von Dorlastan, einem Multifilamentgarn aus Polyesterurethan. Weitere Markennamen sind Elaspan (Invista) und Linel (Fillattice).

Spandex, Lycra, Lykra -  elastomer poliuretanowy produkowany i rozprowadzany przez firmę E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. W swojej strukturze chemicznej spandex posiada grupę mocznikową i grupę uretanową. Jego własności wynikają z naprzemiennej miękkiej i twardej struktury chemicznej.Krótki powtarzający się polimeryczny łańcuch poliglikolu o krotności grupy chemicznej x=40 jest miękki i gumowy. Resztę struktury spandex stanowią grupy mocznikowe, uretanowe, aromatyczne, które są sztywne i niepodatne na rozciąganie.Włókna Spandex odznaczają się dużym wydłużeniem przy zerwaniu, wynoszącym 500-1000%, a w porównaniu z nićmi gumowymi 2-3 krotnie większą wytrzymałością na zerwanie. Charakteryzują się całkowitym powrotem elastycznym po usunięciu obciążenia wywołującego odkształcenie.

L'elastam o elastan è una fibra sintetica di poliuretano molto utilizzata per elasticizzare i tessuti. In Nord America e Australia è nota con il nome di spandex. Dai consumatori è più conosciuta attraverso i marchi commerciali: Lycra (Invista), Elaspan (Invista), Dorlastan (Asahi), Roica (Asahi), Linel (Fillattice), RadiciSpandex (Radici Group). L'uso del termine Lycra (pronuncia laicra e non licra) per indicare genericamente la fibra poliuretanica è scorretto e scoraggiato dallo stesso depositario del marchio.
