Bien que ce « spiced ham » (jambon épicé) soit préparé à partir des chutes de découpe d'autres morceaux de viande plus nobles, le produit était populaire dans les régions lointaines comme Hawaii pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale car il était facile à transporter et à entreposer.On peut utiliser aussi le mot spam (mais en minuscules) pour le pourriel et l'usage abusif de l'Internet.

Zwykle (choć nie zawsze) jest wysyłany masowo.Istotą spamu jest rozsyłanie dużej liczby informacji komercyjnych o jednakowej treści do nieznanych sobie osób. Nie ma znaczenia, jaka jest treść tych wiadomości. Aby określić wiadomość mianem spamu, musi ona spełnić trzy następujące warunki jednocześnie:Treść wiadomości jest niezależna od tożsamości odbiorcy.Odbiorca nie wyraził uprzedniej, zamierzonej zgody na otrzymanie tej wiadomości.Treść wiadomości daje podstawę do przypuszczeń, iż nadawca wskutek jej wysłania może odnieść zyski nieproporcjonalne w stosunku do korzyści odbiorcy.

Lo Spam è un tipo di carne in scatola (Spam -> Spiced Ham) della Hormel Foods Corporation entrato a far parte del folklore.È stato in passato il pretesto per il soggetto di uno sketch del gruppo comico inglese dei Monty Python, molto conosciuto e amato. In particolare, nella fortunata serie "Monty Python's Flying Circus" una coppia di coniugi (il marito interpretato da Eric Idle e la moglie da Graham Chapman) entra in un bar e chiede alla cameriera (Terry Jones) il menu, nel quale l'elenco delle pietanze presenta continuamente "spam": "uova e spam", "uova pancetta e spam", "uova pancetta salsiccia e spam", "spam uova spam spam pancetta e spam" e così via, sempre più insistentemente...
