Space weather is the concept of changing environmental conditions in outer space. It is distinct from the concept of weather within a  planetary atmosphere, and generally deals with the interactions of ambient radiation and matter within interplanetary, and occasionally interstellar space. "Space weather describes the conditions in space that affect Earth and its technological systems. Our space weather is a consequence of the behavior of the sun, the nature of Earth's magnetic field, and our location in the solar system."

La météorologie de l’espace (ou météorologie spatiale) est une discipline récente qui s’intéresse principalement à l'impact de l'activité solaire sur notre environnement terrestre. Plus exactement : La météorologie de l’espace est la discipline qui traite de l’état physique et phénoménologique des environnements spatiaux naturels. Au moyen de l'observation, la surveillance, l'analyse et la modélisation, elle vise plusieurs objectifs : d'une part, comprendre et prévoir l'état du Soleil et des environnements interplanétaire ou planétaire, ainsi que les perturbations qui les affectent, qu’elles soient d’origine solaire ou non; d'autre part, analyser en temps réel ou prévoir d'éventuels effets sur les systèmes biologiques et technologiques (définition adoptée par le portail européen de la météorologie de l’espace www.spaceweather.eu].

Der Begriff Weltraumwetter ist analog zu irdischen atmosphärischen Wetterphänomenen definiert und beschreibt Veränderungen des interplanetaren und interstellaren Mediums, die speziell im erdnahen Bereich der Magnetosphäre (bis 50.000 km Abstand zur Erde) wahrgenommen werden. Hauptsächliche Ursachen sind der  Sonnenwind und die galaktische kosmische Strahlung der Milchstraße. Durch diese Einflüsse gelangen in unregelmäßigen Abständen verstärkt Materie, Teilchen- und Strahlungsströme in das Umfeld der Erde und beeinflussen damit die irdische Magnetosphäre, Ionosphäre und Atmosphäre.
