NASA's Space Shuttle, officially called Space Transportation System (STS), is the spacecraft currently used by the United States government for its human spaceflight missions. At launch, it consists of a rust-colored Space Shuttle external tank (ET), two white, slender Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs), and the Space Shuttle Orbiter, a winged spaceplane which is the space shuttle in the narrow sense.

For information on the Soviet space shuttle program, see the article Buran program.  NASA's Space Shuttle, officially called Space Transportation System (STS), is the United States government's current manned launch vehicle. The winged Shuttle Orbiter is launched vertically, usually carrying five to seven astronauts (although eight have been carried) and up to 50,000 lb (22 700 kg) of payload into low earth orbit. When its mission is complete, the Shuttle can independently move itself out of orbit (by means of its maneuvering thrusters) and  re-enter the Earth's atmosphere. During descent and landing, the Shuttle Orbiter acts as a glider and makes a completely unpowered landing.

C'est le premier engin de ce type, capable d'emmener de gros satellites en orbite basse et, éventuellement, de les rapporter sur la Terre.

Der oder das Space Shuttle ist ein von der NASA in den USA entwickelter Raumfährentyp. Der offizielle Name lautet Space Transportation System, kurz STS. Er ging aus dem Versuch hervor, ein wiederverwendbares Raumfahrzeug zu entwickeln. Dies sollte zu einer Kostenersparnis gegenüber den bis dahin üblichen Raketen führen, bei denen alle Raketenstufen nur einmal verwendet werden konnten. Die erwartete Ersparnis konnte allerdings nicht erreicht werden, und so kostet ein Shuttlestart heute knapp eine halbe Milliarde Dollar.

W założeniach prom, dzięki możliwości wielokrotnego wykorzystania, ma umożliwić znaczną redukcję kosztów związanych z wynoszeniem na orbitę ładunków i pasażerów. Lo Space Shuttle (traduzione letterale: navetta spaziale), spesso abbreviato in Shuttle, nome ufficiale Space Transportation System (traduzione letterale: sistema di trasporto spaziale), in sigla STS, è un modello di navicella spaziale della NASA, l'ente governativo degli Stati Uniti responsabile per i programmi spaziali. È l'unico modello di navicella spaziale degli Stati Uniti attualmente in attività. La sua particolarità è la parziale riutilizzabilità, è stato infatti progettato per effettuare in sicurezza circa un centinaio di voli spaziali sostituendo solo alcune parti ausiliarie.

Il Programma Space Shuttle è un programma spaziale della NASA, l'ente governativo degli Stati Uniti responsabile per i programmi spaziali. Il programma è finalizzato al compimento di missioni spaziali con equipaggio umano e prende il nome dal modello di navicella spaziale utilizzato in tali missioni, lo Space Shuttle. Tutt'oggi attivo, è stato avviato alla fine degli anni sessanta ed entrato in piena attività dalla metà degli anni settanta.
