A spa town (also called a bathing-place or simply a spa) is a town situated around a mineral spa (a developed mineral spring). Patrons resorted to spas to "take the waters" for their purported health benefits. The word comes from the Belgian town Spa. In continental Europe a spa was known as a ville d'eau (town of water). The term spa is used for towns or resorts offering hydrotherapy which can include cold water or mineral water treatments and hot thermal baths.

Als Kurort werden Gemeinden oder Gemeindeteile bezeichnet, denen aufgrund ihrer besonderen Eignung für eine medizinische Therapie (zum Beispiel im Rahmen einer Kur) ein entsprechendes Prädikat verliehen wurde. Kurorte, in denen Wasserkuren (Badekur oder Trinkkur) praktiziert werden, bezeichnet man auch als Badeorte.

Une station thermale, aussi appelé station hydrominérale, ville d'eau ou ville thermale (spa, spa-town, thermal resort ou thermal city, en anglais), est une localité dotée d'un ou plusieurs établissements spécialisés dans le traitement d'affections diverses par les eaux minérales.

Kurort är en behandlingsanläggning i anslutning till en badplats. Kurorter indelas vanligen i havs- och inlandskurorter.

Uzdrowisko - wg ustawy o uzdrowiskach i lecznictwie uzdrowiskowym miejscowość, która posiada warunki naturalne niezbędne do prowadzenia lecznictwa. Należą do nich właściwości lecznicze klimatu, walory przyrodnicze i estetyczne krajobrazu, naturalne zasoby wód mineralnych, gazów i peloidów (borowin), leczniczy wpływ morza oraz inne czynniki biofizyczne środowiska wywierające korzystny wpływ na organizm człowieka.
