The terms "fraternity" and "sorority" (from the Latin words and , meaning "brother" and "sister" respectively) may be used to describe many social and charitable organizations, for example the Lions Club, Epsilon Sigma Alpha, Rotary International, Optimist International, or the Shriners. In the United States and Canada, however, fraternities and sororities are most commonly known as social organizations for higher education students.

On nomme fraternités un certain nombre d'associations légales ou non dont les membres se considèrent comme frères généralement suite à une initiation ou une intronisation dont les détails cérémoniels sont très souvent secrets. Il existe de nombreuses fraternités de par le monde.

Poza tymi krajami istnieją także w Belgii i USA.Corpsy zrzeszone są w dwóch związkach. Pierwszy to związek założony w 1848 r. przy starych uniwersytetach humanistycznych - KSCV (Kösener Senioren-Convents Verband – Związek Konwentów Prezesów w Kösen). Drugi to założony w 1863 dla corpsów z uczelni technicznych i ekonomicznych - WSC (Weinheimer Senioren-Convent – Konwent Prezesów w Weinheim).
