For the galaxy of the same name, see Sombrero Galaxy Sombrero means "hat" in Spanish. In English-speaking countries it typically refers to a type of hat originating in Mexico. Sombreros usually have a somewhat high tip and a very wide brim, used for protection from the hot sun in Mexico. Peasant sombreros are usually made of straw, while wealthier Hispanics wear sombreros made of felt. It is almost unseen in modern urban settings, except as part of a folkloric outfit worn in certain festivities. Cowboys of the American southwest later adopted the sombrero and modified it into the cowboy hat.

Le sombrero est un type de chapeau originaire du Mexique. Les sombreros sont généralement assez haut au niveau de la tête et possèdent un bord très large, permettant à ses utilisateurs de se protéger du soleil. Le nom dérive de l'espagnol sombra qui signifie ombre ou obscurité. Le mot sombrero utilisé en français est un emprunt lexical à l'espagnol, où le terme y est utilisé pour désigner tous les chapeaux avec un bord. Généralement au Mexique on doit préciser "sombrero charro", puisque le mot "sombrero" est le terme générique pour dire chapeau.

Ein Sombrero bezeichnet im Spanischen allgemein einen Hut (abgeleitet vom Wort sombra für Schatten). Als Lehnwort im Deutschen meint "Sombrero" insbesondere einen breitkrempigen, aus Stroh oder Filz gefertigten Hut, der vor allem in Mittel- und Südamerika Feldarbeitern als Sonnenschutz dient. Er ist in diesen Gegenden (besonders in Mexiko) Bestandteil der traditionellen Tracht.

Stamtąd trafił do hiszpańskich kolonii w Ameryce Środkowej i Południowej. Stanowi narodowe nakrycie głowy Meksykańczyków i Chilijczyków.Jedna z galaktyk z racji swojego kształtu została nazwana Galaktyką Sombrero.

Il sombrero è un tipico cappello messicano, caratterizzato da un bordo molto largo per proteggersi dal sole. La parola deriva dallo spagnolo sombra che significa ombra. In spagnolo il termine "sombrero" viene usato per qualsiasi cappello con il bordo largo, mentre il sombrero, come viene inteso nelle altre lingue, viene spesso chiamato "cappello messicano".
