The word comes from the Greek word Σωματικóς (Somatikòs), meaning "of the body". It has different meanings in various disciplines.In neurobiology, somatic can be an adjective referring to the soma, the part of the neuron containing the cell nucleus.In anatomy, somatic can refer to the part of the nervous system that controls voluntary movement and sensation and judges relative effort and weight, called proprioception. Additionally, somatic muscles are basically those of the musculo-skeletal system.

Le système nerveux somatique est la partie du système nerveux périphérique associée au contrôle volontaire des mouvements du corps via l'action des muscles squelettiques, et à la perception des stimuli externes via des récepteurs spécifiques. Le système nerveux somatique est ainsi constitué de fibres efférentes qui sont responsables de la contraction musculaire, et de fibres afférentes reçevant des informations venant de l'extérieur.

Somatisch bedeutet: „das, was sich auf den Körper bezieht, körperlich“. Der Begriff leitet sich vom griechischen soma (Plural: somata) ab, das den „Körper, Leib“ bezeichnet. Somatogen meint demgegenüber „das, was sich vom Körper herleitet“, somit körperlich bedingt ist. Die Bezeichnung „somatisch“ wird vor allem in der Medizinsprache gebraucht, um körperliche (organische) von psychischen Krankheiten oder funktionellen Beschwerden abzugrenzen. Das Gegenteil zu somatisch ist psychisch. Von somatoformen Störungen ist die Rede, wenn keine organische Ursache für die Beschwerden gefunden werden kann.
