Soil is a natural body that consists of layers (soil horizons), composed primarily of minerals, which differ from their parent materials in their texture, structure, consistency, color, chemical, biological and other physical characteristics. The end result, soil, is the end product of the influence of the climate (temperature, precipitation), relief (slope), organisms (flora and fauna), parent materials (original minerals), temperature, and time. In engineering, soil is referred to as regolith, or loose rock material. Strictly speaking, soil is the depth of regolith that influences and has been influenced by plant roots and may range in depth from centimeters to many meters.

Soil, often typeset as SOiL, is an American rock band that formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1997. After some independent releases, the band was the first rock group signed to J Records and achieved mainstream success with their major label debut, Scars, in 2001. After the J Records sophomore release Redefine in 2004, Soil was released from the label and, shortly after, frontman Ryan McCombs left the group. He would go on to become the new vocalist of Drowning Pool the following year.

SOiL ist eine Alternative-Metal-Band aus Chicago, USA. Sie wurde 1997 gegründet und 1998 stand das Debütalbum El Chupacabra in den Läden. Dieses sowie der Nachfolger Throttle Junkies, stieß jedoch noch nicht auf großes Interesse. Der internationale Durchbruch gelang erst mit dem dritten Album Scars, das 2001 veröffentlicht wurde. Soil verdiente sich in einer sehr langen Tour die Reputation, eine großartige Live-Band zu sein. Das neueste Album namens Picture Perfect wurde 2009 veröffentlicht. Soil zeichnet sich durch einen harten, aber auch emotionalen und melodischen Sound sowie durch die sehr vielseitige Stimme des Sängers, Ryan McCombs, aus. Dieser verließ die Band jedoch 2004. Sein Nachfolger aus New York, der ehemaligen Diesel Machine-Frontmann AJ Cavalier, ist seit 15. November 2004 der Sänger von Soil. Ryan McCombs singt seit 2005 bei Drowning Pool.

Der Boden (von althochdt.: bodam) ist der oberste Teil der Erdkruste, der praktisch immer auch belebt ist. Nach unten wird der Boden von festem oder lockerem Gestein begrenzt, nach oben meist durch eine Vegetationsdecke sowie die Atmosphäre. Dort wo die oberste Erdschicht wasserbedeckt ist, also in Seen, Flüssen und Meeren, spricht man meist eher von Sedimenten als von Böden. Je nach Sichtweise und Wissenschaftsdisziplin lässt sich „Boden“ unterschiedlich definieren.

SOiL est un groupe d'alternative nu metal américain. Le groupe est actuellement composé de A.J. Cavalier (chant), Shaun Glass (guitare), Adam Zadel (guitare), Tim King (basse) et Tom Schoefield (batterie).

Le sol représente la couche superficielle, meuble, de la croûte terrestre, résultant de la transformation de la roche mère enrichie par des apports organiques. On différencie le sol de la croûte terrestre par la présence de vie.
