A society, or a human society, is a group of people related to each other through persistent relations, or a large social grouping sharing the same geographical or virtual territory, subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations. Human societies are characterized by patterns of relationships (social relations) between individuals who share a distinctive culture and institutions; a given society may be described as the sum total of such relationships among its constituent members. In the social sciences, a larger society often evinces stratification and/or dominance patterns in subgroups.

Als Gesellschaft bezeichnet man in der Soziologie

• allgemeiner eine durch unterschiedliche Merkmale zusammengefasste und abgegrenzte Anzahl von Personen, die als soziale Akteure miteinander verknüpft leben und direkt oder indirekt interagieren;
• die Gesamtheit der Verhältnisse zwischen den Menschen (Marx);
• soziologisch nach Ferdinand Tönnies eine genau definierte Gruppierung von Personen, „Gesellschaft“ im Gegensatz zur „Gemeinschaft“ (vgl. Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft);
• in der kommunikationstheoretischen Konzeption Niklas Luhmanns wird die Gesellschaft als "alle füreinander kommunikativ zugänglichen Ereignisse" beschrieben.

Samhälle har flera betydelser:

• Samhälle (sociologi), grupp av individer som lever förenade av ett nätverk av sociala relationer, och som är mer eller mindre avskiljt från andra samhällen.
• Ett geografiskt samhälle
• I vardagligare bemärkelse en mindre tätort
• En enhet uppbyggd av eusociala djur, till exempel myror

Społeczeństwo to podstawowe pojęcie socjologiczne, jednakże niejednoznacznie definiowane. Terminem tym tradycyjnie ujmuje się dużą zbiorowość społeczną, zamieszkującą dane terytorium, posiadające wspólną kulturę, wspólną tożsamość oraz sieć wzajemnych stosunków społecznych. Społeczeństwo ponadto posiada własne instytucje pozwalające mu na funkcjonowanie oraz formę organizacyjną w postaci państwa, plemienia czy narodu.
