Social structure is a term used in the social sciences to refer to patterned social arrangements in society that are both emergent from and determinant of the actions of the individuals. The usage of the term "social structure" has changed over time and may reflect the various levels of analysis within differing sub-fields of sociology. On the macro scale, it can refer to the system of socioeconomic stratification (e.g., the class structure), social institutions, or, other patterned relations between large social groups. On the meso scale, it can refer to the structure of social network ties between individuals or organizations. On the micro scale, it can refer to the way norms shape the behavior of actors within the social system.

Der Begriff „Sozialstruktur“ stammt aus der Soziologie, wurde dort bereits 1905 bei Ferdinand Tönnies konzeptualisiert und bezeichnet Einteilungsmöglichkeiten von Gesellschaften nach sozialen Merkmalen auf der Grundlage unterschiedlicher Theorien. Ein besonders wichtiger Teilbereich ist die soziale Schichtung.

Jest to też układ stosunków społecznych pomiędzy poszczególnymi osobami, kategoriami społecznymi lub organizacjami.

En sociología, la Estructura social es el concepto que describe la forma que adopta el sistema global de las relaciones entre individuos; introducido en la ciencia por el alemán Georg Simmel, a finales del siglo XIX y por Ferdinand Tönnies con 'comunidad íntima' y 'asociación impersonal', para explicar las relaciones sistemáticas que vinculan a miembros de una determinada comunidad aunque no se encuentren en ningún momento en contacto directo, ha resultado uno de los conceptos más problemáticos de la disciplina. La falta de un consenso acerca de en qué medida las estructuras tienen una existencia real, más allá de las acciones de los individuos —el llamado problema de la relación agencia-estructura y la posición de algunas corrientes, especialmente de origen empirista, que niegan la posibilidad de concebir adecuadamente la estructura social en su conjunto, han sido causa de numerosos debates.
